Suo Oshima
History & Culture
Shogonji Temple has a history of over 450 years. The Buddhism left behind by our predecessors who survived harsh times, wishing that they would come across this teaching, is delivered in words and methods that resonate with people living today.
The museum exhibits materials related to Tsunekazu Miyamoto, a folklorist from Suo Oshima, and contains records and tools of real life and culture built by common people, providing visitors with information and history of the island.
It is a masterpiece of local Choshu carpenters, famous for building shrines and temples, and was constructed in 1885. The advanced techniques of the traditional construction methods of the time can be seen in every detail of the workmanship, such as the joints and joinery, allowing visitors to enjoy the traditional architecture of the time.
Itsuo Oshima Shrine, a branch of Itsuo Shrine in Miyajima, Hiroshima, also has a Torii gate built into the sea, and the beautiful sea of the Setouchi area and the red Torii gate are a perfect match.
This is a memorial hall for lyricist Tetsuro Hoshino, a native and honorary citizen of Suo Oshima, who is known for his many famous songs, including "Otoko wa Tsuraiyo," "Namida Fune," "Anko Tsubaki wa Koi no Hana (Love is a Flower of Love)," and many more
The museum also exhibits documents and items related to the salvaged battleship Mutsu, as well as other relics and artifacts. There is also an open-air exhibit where visitors can see the tip of the bow and the screw, and a cenotaph overlooking the sea.
Nature
At the top of the mountain is an observatory from which you can see most of the eastern part of Oshima, offering a spectacular view of the Setouchi area's unique archipelagic beauty. There is also a hang glider/paraglider launch pad (flight point), which is a popular photo spot.
This is one of the "Happiness Prayer Rocks," a power spot on Suo Oshima. At the top of the rock, there is the Ryuzaki Kannon Hall, whose principal deity is the eleven-faced Kannon (Goddess of Mercy).
The sand road appears only three hours each day before and after low tide. It is possible to cross from Suo Oshima (Yashiro Island) to Mamiya Island, which lies offshore.
This bathing facility was donated by lyricist Tetsuro Hoshino, a native and honorary resident of Suo Oshima, who is known for his many famous songs. In recent years, it has become a popular spot for viewing the scenery.
Activity & leisure
You can experience boat fishing on a chartered cruiser at the island restaurant "Salwale". Enjoy a set lunch (pizza, pasta, salad, and drink) from the popular menu.
