Historical private house in Suo Oshima.
The history and present of the citrus island.

A trip to Suo Oshima
-where nature and history are in harmony

Suo Oshima has long been an important island for transportation in the Seto Inland Sea, and while many people visit the island, the islanders' activities have been passed down from generation to generation. In the Edo period (1603-1867), a group of top-notch temple and shrine builders called Choshu Daiku left behind many artistic structures. Later, the historical value of the island's lifestyle and culture was further enhanced, and visitors can experience firsthand the history and culture of the island from the Manyo Period to the present day.Have a wonderful time to heal your heart.

The Cocon Setouchi preserves the citrus ancestors' work.

Fujii Hikoemon (藤井彦右衛門) introduced citrus cultivation to Suo Oshima during the Edo period.
The former site of his mansion was turned into a lemon grove, and three old private houses were renovated into an inn for rent. This is not an effort to tear down old houses but to revitalize them as inns in order to connect the history and culture of the region to the future.
The main residence of Kokon Setouchi was moved and built in 1923 from a part of the house of the village headman Fujii Hikoemon (1816-1896), who brought the first tangerine seedlings from Kishu to this island at the end of the Edo period. When we took over this old house, the foundation, floors, and walls were so badly damaged that we considered dismantling the house.
However, as we make jam and lemoncello from the island's citrus fruits, we felt it was our mission to restore the building and the former site of the house, where we could feel the breath of Hikoemon Fujii, the founder of citrus cultivation on the island, into a “place” that many people can use, and to bequeath it to future generations. The site of the former residence was planted with lemon trees and turned into a citrus grove.
The main residence, the villa “Sasuri”, and the detached house “WithDogs”, three old private houses, will be restored into an inn that blends the “old days” and the “present” of the island, and will carry the traces of Hikoemon Fujii into the future.
We hope you will enjoy your time on the island, reminiscing about the activities of the island's predecessors in the old houses and the citrus groves that remain in the ruins of the old houses and residences.
